Caramel apples and candy apples. Something delicious and healthy combined, what more could you want? This will certainly steal the show with your children. In fact, they can also make candy apples themselves. Please note: we do work with a glow of hot caramel and chocolate of course.
These types of apples, dipped in caramel, chocolate or other sweet coating, originate from America. Nowadays you see them more and more in the Netherlands around autumn and Christmas, especially at (Christmas) markets around that time.
candy apple history
It all seems to start with the well-known red candy apple. William W. Kolb is said to have dipped the very first apple in a pan of melted red cinnamon candy in 1908. The red shiny apples looked beautiful in his window and he sold them for 5 cents each. They became wildly popular and soon became available all over America, especially at candy stores and circuses.
Caramel apple history
Caramel apples didn't come until years later, in the 1950's to be exact. At Kraft Foods, they had a lot of caramel candies left over after Halloween. Employee Dan Walker then decided to melt the candy and dip apples in it. For ten years this super popular delicacy was made by hand. In 1960 the caramel apple machine was patented.
Pictured below is actually called a 'taffy apple' because it has crushed peanuts added as a topping.
Other varieties of candy apples
Besides the old school candy apple, caramel apple and taffy apple, there are even more varieties. How about the chocolate apple, to which colored candy toppings are often added, such as chocolate sprinkles, nuts and M&Ms. Oh yes, there are also jelly apples. This type of candy apple is sold on Coney Island, New York. Jelly apples differ from regular candy apples in that the candy coating has a softer and cherry flavor rather than cinnamon flavor.
