Taking care of yourself sounds so obvious, but when do you actually do that? Exercise more, meditate, read a book, take a day out... There are plenty of ways to take care of yourself and they can be surprisingly simple. How about starting with taking care of your skin? That is a very rewarding activity, did you know that? Because if you take good care of your skin, you will look brighter and healthier in no time.

Gua Sha: the discovery of the year

I personally think the Gua Sha stone is the (skin care) discovery of the year. You've probably seen them in your Instagram feed. The flat, smooth stones are made of rose quartz, amethyst or jade for a firm, rejuvenating facial massage.

What exactly is Gua Sha?

The Gua Sha massage technique came from Asia, where it has been used for centuries. To be precise, Gua Sha originally (2,000 years ago) comes from traditional Chinese medicine. The word consists of two parts, namely 'gua', which means to scrape, and 'sha', which means sand or grains of sand. A treatment is therefore 'scraping away grains of sand'. Metaphorically, because 'sha' stands for fixed or accumulated chi, which means life energy. The Gua Sha stones come in different shapes as you can see below.

And yes, I also have a Gua Sha stone and now use it in the morning and evening in combination with a serum or oil.

Why should you use a Gua Sha?

Because it works. Not only am I speaking from experience here, you will also find plenty of success stories if you Google it. The Gua Sha stone is not only used for your face, but is also often applied to the body (neck, shoulders, back, etc.). Massage with the flat stone stimulates blood circulation, releasing blockages and giving the skin a pink glow. Gua Sha is also often used to tighten the contours of your face, soften wrinkles and fine lines and improve skin texture.

How do you use a Gua Sha?

Be sure to check YouTube if you want to see how it works. But here is a handy step-by-step plan.

  1. ensure well-cleansed skin
  2. use a few drops of facial oil and spread over your face
  3. scrape the Gua Sha stone in one direction, holding it at a 30-45 degree angle. Scrape from your chin and jawline upwards and outwards from the center of your face
  4. if you also want to massage your décolleté and neck, work from the neck upwards

PLEASE NOTE : you can feel the massage, but do not press the stone too hard into the skin.
