Cycling is the perfect way to get from point A to point B, while getting exercise every day. Whether it concerns regular bicycles, electric bicycles or even electric folding bicycles , cycling is cheaper than going by car, healthier than traveling by public transport, and you also arrive at your destination happier and more energetic. But there are a few things you need to keep in mind to make cycling successful.

Familiarize yourself with the traffic rules

That sounds simple, but it goes wrong so often... So a quick refresher is sometimes quite useful. You keep to the right, wait until the traffic light is green and extend your arms to indicate which way you are going. But is that sufficient knowledge of the traffic rules? For example, what rules apply to cycling on sidewalks: is that allowed and if so, how fast can you cycle? If a bicycle crossing over a road has no traffic lights, who has priority: you or the motorist? We all benefit from regularly familiarizing ourselves with the traffic rules that apply to cyclists. Busy city streets during rush hour can be stressful, but having a good sense of how to behave in traffic can help you feel more confident and ride your bike safely.

Invest in a decent lock (or two)

Anyone who has ever arrived where their bike was parked and found nothing but empty air can tell you that it is not a pleasant experience. Even if the bike is parked in a secure bike shed, it is still worth locking the bike with a quality lock just to be on the safe side. It is even advisable to take an extra lock. With a cable lock, for example, the bicycle is more secure than with just one lock. The first lock involves trying to secure the frame and one of the wheels of the bike to a fixed point, such as a bike rack. You lock the second wheel with a second lock, or a cable attached to the first lock. Sometimes thieves steal just one wheel, instead of the entire bike.

Make sure you are always clearly visible

Attentive drivers should be able to see you clearly, regardless of what you are wearing. It also doesn't hurt to make yourself extra visible with neon-colored clothing and accessories. If you cycle in the dark, bicycle lights are required by law. It is advisable to have more than one lamp at the front and rear, but especially at the rear. While driving, you may not notice the taillight battery running out, so having two taillights will keep you safer.
