Do you hear that? That’s the rain tapping on the roof! And let me guess: the kids are already getting restless, even though the weekend is just around the corner. But wait a minute, what if we turn those raindrops into something magical?
Picture this: the two of you sitting at the kitchen table, surrounded by colourful markers and kitchen paper. Before you know it, you’re conjuring up the most beautiful roses! Doesn’t that sound like the perfect rainy day activity? This brilliant idea comes from Nicky, a creative mum from the UK. On a day when the rain kept falling, she decided to make something special with her kids. The result? Breathtakingly beautiful roses made from… yes, simple kitchen paper!

Nicky says: “We’re getting so much rain here in the UK at the moment! Instead of letting the weather spoil your mood, why not use the rain to your advantage with this fun, child-friendly craft project? Using the power of water, you can transform boring scribbles into works of art!”
Inspired by @sibster, who made beautiful roses from coffee filters, Nicky got to work with what she had at home: kitchen paper and felt-tip pens. And the result is stunning! The secret? The rain that makes the colors merge into a beautiful watercolor effect.
Supplies
- a kitchen roll
- felt-tip pens
- glue stick
- trays and/or baking trays
- cups with a diameter of 5 - 7 cm (see reel)
How do you make the roses?
1 - Color several sheets of kitchen roll with markers.
2 - Spread them out on something like a tray or baking sheet outside in the rain. If it's windy, possibly with some stones on the corners.
3 - Once the colours have become 'watercolour-like' you can bring the leaves inside to dry.
4 - Once dry, fold a sheet of kitchen roll four times to make a small square of about 5 by 5 cm. Cut this into a clover shape by rounding off one corner. Each square of two-ply paper will give you 8 layers to work with.
5 - Place the layers in half over the cup, using glue between each layer, building up until you have a full rose.
💡 Extra tip : provide the edges at the ends of the roses with a thin layer of glue and sprinkle with gold glitter. This way you immediately have very beautiful Christmas decorations for the tree later!
