Is it dessert? Is it a cake? Is it a treat? The Japanese Fruit Sando has it all! This fruity sensation is a hit in Japan and it is high time to introduce this delicacy here.

What is a Fruit Sando?

The Fruit Sando is a sandwich made of super fluffy white bread, generously topped with whipped cream and fresh, juicy fruit. The fruit is usually arranged diagonally so that when cut through, the sandwich is picture perfect! Every bite is a party in which sweet, fruity and creamy are perfectly balanced. About the bread, which is the Japanese shokupan, a milk bread known for its soft and airy texture.

The origin of the Fruit Sando

It is not entirely known where the Fruit Sando comes from, but we do know that it appeared in Japanese fruit shops and cafes in the 1980s. For Japanese fruit shops where you can find fruit of the very best quality, the Fruit Sando is an attractive way to present these products. The Fruit Sando quickly became popular among locals and tourists alike, and today it is a common treat in Japanese bakeries and cafes. That's where you can find this treat if you ever visit Japan.

Fruit Sando with matcha recipe

Making a Fruit Sando at home is easy and the results are amazing. I added extra flavor and color: matcha . This green tea powder, which you also use to make a delicious matcha latte, is super tasty in combination with the sweet cream.

Ingredients for 2 people:

5 large strawberries
100ml whipped cream
2 tsp matcha powder
1 tsp icing sugar
½ tsp vanilla extract
2 slices of casino white, 1cm thick

Preparation

  • Wash the strawberries and pat them dry, if you use smaller strawberries you may need more.
  • Mix the whipped cream, matcha powder, icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until you get firm peaks.
  • Place the two slices of bread on the work surface and spread them both with 1/3 of the whipped cream.
  • Divide the strawberries diagonally over one of the sandwiches, starting in the middle. Divide the rest of the strawberries over the rest of the sandwich. Then spread the rest of the whipped cream over the strawberries.
  • Place the second sandwich on top and remember to keep the diagonal line running. Wrap the sandwich tightly in a piece of plastic wrap, you can now draw a line to remember how you will cut it later.
  • Place it in the refrigerator for about an hour, then take it out and cut it in half diagonally. You can also cut off the crusts, but I personally don't think that's necessary (and it's a shame!).
  • Present the Fruit Sando on a nice plate and enjoy!
