That one scent can make you very happy, because scents are inextricably linked to our emotions. That is because smell is your most dominant and unique sense. We can describe how something feels or looks relatively easily. When we think of a warm summer day or a green bench, we all think of more or less the same thing. But a scent experience is very personal.

How does that work?

Your sense of smell is directly connected to the parts of your brain where your emotions and memories are formed. The emotions you feel the moment you smell something for the first time are therefore forever inextricably linked to that smell.

Because the impression a scent leaves is so deep, scents can therefore influence our emotions and experience. So also how you feel at home or at work, can be influenced by using different pleasant smells. Scent historian Caro Verbeek explains: 'If you have good memories of a certain scent, for example from your childhood, reproducing that scent can make you more productive, or give you a more homely feeling'.

Collective happy scents

Smell and the experience are very personal, but there are scents that evoke a positive emotion for many people. Such as the smell of clean laundry, lavender and lily of the valley.

Which scent does what to you?

Mandarine
The scent of mandarin gives a feeling of happiness that is often associated with a carefree childhood. This subtle scent is less strong than orange and helps you a little in the right direction to see the sunny side of life.

Jasmine
Jasmine provides a sense of self-confidence and euphoria. If you feel listless and indifferent, this scent can loosen you up a bit. This scent is therefore also very suitable for meditation.

Bergamot
Bergamot is known as a comforting and calming scent. Use this scent when you want to open yourself up to a little fun and joy.

Bach flower

And do you know Bach flower remedies? These are natural extracts based on the teachings of doctor Edward Bach. This English doctor developed a treatment method that focuses on emotions. Also super interesting!
